A Dec. 21 hearing has been scheduled on a request by the Fund for Animals for a temporary restraining order to halt Montana's controversial bison hunt.

The animal-rights group said it filed a request for the order late Tuesday in U.S. District Court. The group filed suit earlier, contending the killing violates the National Environmental Policy Act.The hunt was authorized by the Montana Legislature to control brucellosis, which infects about half the Yellowstone bison herd and causes cows to abort their calves. State authorities say they fear the disease will spread to Montana cattle.
