The charred remains of a van with a body inside it, believed to be a female, have been found on a ledge overlooking Virgin.
The death was being treated as a possible homicide, said Washington County Sheriff Glenwood Humphries.Authorities still were trying to identify the victim, and cause of death had not been determined. An investigation by the state crime lab and medical examiner's office was pending.
Deputy Pam Humphreys said Rulon Darrington of Toquerville found the Ford Aerostar van about 10 a.m. Tuesday at Upper Smith's Mesa at the top of Coral Canyon about 30 miles east of St. George.
The vehicle, surrounded by pinyon and juniper, was facing southeast about 150 feet south of the main Smith's Mesa road.
The victim was on the driver's side of the vehicle.
