KUER and KUED are joining forces with Crossroads Urban Center to provide Utahns in need with a Christmas dinner.
The public broadcasting stations will hold their annual food drive in front of Kingsbury Hall on the University of Utah campus Wednesday, Dec. 19, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Volunteers will be stationed under a canopy in front of the building to collect nonperishable food items, so that people making donations will not have to leave their cars. The stations are asking people to donate items like frozen turkey or chicken, canned yams, ham, pumpkin, packaged stuffing, cranberries and other holiday fare. All food collected will be given to the center, which is again distributing Christmas dinners with all the trimmings to families who need assistance.
Last year's drive collected food for more than 200 families and helped stock the food pantry at the Crossroads Urban Center. The volunteers collected five truckloads of food items, including more than 200 turkeys, chickens and hams, as well as hundreds of canned and boxed goods.
The center asks for nonperishable food items so that families can prepare their own meals. Special food packages will be made available to those without cooking facilities.
