Weber State University quarterback Jamie Martin has been named first team All-American by the Sports Network. The Sports Network team is one of four major Division 1-AA All-American teams. The others are the Walter Camp Foundation, Kodak Corporation and the Associated Press. The Sports Network team voting was conducted by Sports Information Directors at the Division 1-AA schools and the votes were tabulated by the Sports Network.
In addition to being named All-American, Martin, a 6-foot-4-inch, 200 pound sophomore, is now a finalist for the Walter Payton Trophy, the Division 1-AA equivalent of the Heisman Trophy.The Payton Trophy winner will be announced Saturday during the half time of the Nevada-Georgia Southern Division 1-AA championship game on CBS-TV.
Martin, from Arroyo Grande, Calif., led Division 1-AA in Total Offense, averaging 337.6 yards per game. He led all Division 1-AA quarterbacks in passing with 3,700 yards and had 23 touchdown passes.
His single game effort of 504 yards vs.
Montana, was tops in Division 1-AA for 1990. Martin was one of only two sophomores named to the first team. The other was Tennessee State punter, Colin Godfrey.
Kelvin Dexter, a 6-foot-3-inch, 205 pound senior offensive guard from Las Vegas, Nev.,earned Honorable Mention All-American honors on the Sports Network team as well.
