St. Francis of Assisi Church will celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Wednesday.
The Roman Catholic bishop of Salt Lake City, the Most Rev. William Weigand, will participate in the celebration at St. Francis, 172 N. 500 West."We are pleased that Bishop Weigand will lead us in the celebration of this feast day, which is important not only to Mexicans and Mexican-Americans, but for all Catholics living in the Americas," said Friar Garret Edmunds, pastor of St. Francis.
Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patroness of the Americas. Catholics hold a feast to commemorate the appearance of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Juan Diego, an Indian convert to Christianity, in 1531 on Tepeyac, a hill northwest of Mexico City.
The celebration will begin with a Mass at 7:30 p.m., which will include the blessing of a new statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The St. Francis Guadalupana Society will host a fiesta and reception in honor of Bishop Weigand after the Mass. Mexican hot chocolate and pan dulce will be served.
Pastor Edmunds invites anyone interested "to join us for this special occasion."
