Ed Asner, best known as the gruff television character Lou Grant, believes his political activism has hurt his career.

Asner said his workload is a fraction of what it was during the 1970s and early '80s, when he played the news editor on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and its spinoff, "Lou Grant."The former president of the Screen Actors Guild cited his union activites and open criticism of U.S. policy in El Salvador.
