Slabs from the dismantled Berlin Wall have been set up again near the Reichstag building - as a memorial to the people who died trying to escape to the West during 41 years of hard-line communist rule.

Painters working on the memorial Thursday sprayed the 10 foot-by-3-foot wall sections with the years and the numbers of people killed each year trying to flee from East Germany, from its founding in 1949 until Nov. 9, 1989, when people were able to cross freely again.Germany was unified Oct. 3.

More than 200 people died trying to escape East Germany, including at least 80 who died trying to flee over the hated barrier that split Berlin.
