A day after their protests brought him down, the enemies of ousted President Hussain Muhammad Ershad demanded Friday that he and his ministers be tried for human rights violations and corruption.

Ershad was replaced by Supreme Court Chief Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed, who will preside over an interim government until parliamentary elections are held within 90 days.Political analysts doubt the interim government will initiate any case against Ershad and his colleagues. Ahmed has only one mandate - to conduct the elections. But the demands for score-settling, official or otherwise, are unlikely to abate.

A mob in Dhaka on Thursday beat to death a man they accused of being an Ershad supporter, witnesses said.
