Fire Chief Joe Murray wants smoke detectors hanging from the ceiling of every house in Ogden.

Murray has initiated a proposal requiring the safety devices in all existing homes and buildings. The City Council is considering such an ordinance as an amendment to the uniform fire code.On the state level, a bill similar to the proposed city ordinance died in the last legislative session.

Murray said other cities in Utah have adopted smoke detector laws.

Murray said the devices helped avoid tragedy at a 25th Street hotel fire several weeks ago.

The proposed ordinance would call for smoke detectors to be placed in all existing apartments, houses, hotels, motels, lodges, mobile homes and manufactured homes.
