French designer Pierre Cardin says he plans to produce and sell his coveted garb in this fashion-deprived land, where shops still stock poor-quality, drab and utilitarian clothes.
Cardin worked out details of an agreement Wednesday in a meeting with Premier Petre Roman. He is to open a boutique selling his line in Bucharest by next September. Shops in other large towns have been actively discouraged by the secret police. Youths caught in hippie or punk garb were frequently arrested.Cardin told a news conference this week he intends to license the manufacture of his products to local companies and could also open a branch of his Maxim's restaurant chain in Bucharest.
He already has cooperative ventures in Hungary, the Soviet Union and China.
