President Mikhail Gorbachev has ordered a vigorous campaign against pornography, erotic videos and smut to "safeguard public morals."

Gorbachev's latest presidential decree attacked the rise in erotica now increasingly available on late-night television and in publications no longer subject to censorship."Taking into consideration the anxiety of the Soviet people about the spread of different kinds of pornography, pseudo-medical literature, erotic videos and the like . . . urgent measures should be worked out to safeguard public morals," the decree, issued Wednesday, said.

On Tuesday, Gorbachev expressed his horror at the Supreme Soviet on what was now on television.

"A couple of days ago, I saw on television a certain professor citing Chinese art to illustrate interesting sexual positions," Gorbachev said. "This came as a great shock to our public."
