Americans recycled some 27.6 million tons of paper last year - more than a million tons over the amount recycled in 1988, according to Georgia-Pacific Corp.

About 26 million tons of paper were recycled in 1988.Georgia-Pacific says it is recycling about 850,000 tons of waste paper a year for containerboard, gypsum paperboard, printing paper and tissue.

The amount of recycled paper is expected to rise each year as more U.S. pulp and paper mills use scrap paper to decrease operating costs.
