The City Council postponed action on a proposal to eliminate parking on 700 North until after a public hearing.
The hearing will be next week as part of the regularly scheduled Tuesday meeting of the Provo City Council. An ordinance prohibiting parking along 700 North between 200 West and 900 West would take effect May 1, if the council approves the measure.
Mayor Joe Jenkins said the road receives a lot of traffic, especially with motorists going to and from Brigham Young University. Parts of the street have high accident rates compared with similar streets in Provo.
As BYU continues to eliminate on-campus parking, students park along streets near the campus, said Jenkins. The street parking, combined with heavy traffic, creates dangerous situations.
Eliminating parking is expected to lessen traffic congestion and make snow removal easier.
