Brigham City police say five Box Elder High School students might not be facing possible burglary and theft charges had they refrained from shouting an obscenity at an off-duty police officer.

Police Lt. Danny Earl said it all started this past weekend when burglaries occurred at the Brigham Sand & Gravel and Parson companies.Office equipment and supplies ranging from computers and typewriters to candy and cans of soda pop were taken from the two businesses. The total loss was estimated at $10,000, Earl said.

He said the case broke Monday night when a car sped through his neighborhood and he yelled at it to slow down. The occupants of the car swore at him and drove on.

Earl made a note of the car. He said he wanted to talk to the occupants later, if he found them. He did.

The car was spotted Tuesday at the high school parking lot, Earl said, adding that some electronic equipment was found in the auto.
