A Salt Lake veterinarian, accused of illegally issuing medication to his children, will have his license to prescribe certain controlled substances suspended for three months, an order says.

The suspension against Dr. Roddy C. Sharp takes effect Dec. 27, according to an order issued by the state Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing. The order said Sharp tried to save money by purchasing Methylphenidate, or Ritalin, to fill prescriptions issued by his children's physician, rather than use a pharmacy. Sharp packaged, labeled and dispensed the drugs, through his wife, to his sons, the order says.

State law prohibits veterinarians to prescribe drugs other than for the treatment of animals, the order said.

Sharp's veterinarian license was not affected by the order.
