Prevention and control of AIDS and HIV have been assigned to a new bureau in the state Health Department, according to a department spokesman.

Ross Martin said that the Division of Community Health Services has been reorganized to create a Bureau of AIDS/HIV Prevention and Control. AIDS and HIV formerly came under the purview of the Bureau of Epidemiology."This area has grown from one staff member in 1983 to 17 positions and a $1.2 million budget," Martin said.

"The bottom line is that AIDS and HIV are here to stay for longer than most people think," said Community Health Services Director Doug Vilnius. "We estimate there are at least 2,000 Utahns who are carrying the AIDS virus and don't know it," he said.
