Handmade snow cones are being blamed for an outbreak of shigella, a rare bacterial infection.

In Knox County, 242 people have the illness, 192 of them children younger than 11, according to county health officials.The infection, caused by a bacteria that infests the intestinal track, causes diarrhea, fever, cramps, headaches and vomiting. The illness can last several weeks and is treated with fluids and antibiotics. It is highly contagious.

Health officials traced seven of the original cases to handmade snow cones being sold by street vendors.
