Police have scheduled a Wednesday shooting review board following a Saturday incident in which a West Valley officer shot and wounded a man while responding to a family fight.

Injured was John Alex Daniel, 5665 W. 3980 South, who was shot in the arm by officer William C. Froehlich, who said the man had pointed a hunting rifle at him.Police were called to the house to quell a family fight that had erupted between Daniel and several of his brothers, who told police they had been drinking when 23-year-old John Daniel became violent.

Froehlich and officer Barbara Vance said they talked to the brothers, who were outside the duplex when they arrived, and were told Daniel did not have a gun but was inside breaking up the house.

One of the brothers gave Froehlich a key, which he used to open the front door, according to a police report. Once inside, Froehlich said, a male suspect pointed a hunting rifle in his direction and then pointed it directly at him after ignoring several commands by the officer to put the gun down. Froehlich said in the report he fired at the man after he pointed the rifle directly at him.

Officers later discovered the rifle was not loaded.

Daniel was treated at Pioneer Valley Hospital and then booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated assault, disorderly conduct and vandalism. Daniel has since been released from jail and is awaiting an appearance in 3rd Circuit Court on the charges, according to a court clerk.
