New Yorkers have become used to going to the museum and finding a gift shop there. Now the museums are bringing their shops out to where the people are.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art are both opening new branches in landmark midtown sites. The Metropolitan Museum has opened a spacious gift shop in Rockefeller Center, overlooking the merry scene of the skating rink (in summer it's the outdoor cafe).

This is the largest of its satellite stores outside the museum. The others are in Macy's and at the Mid-Manhattan Branch of the New York Public Library in New York City; in Stamford and Hartford, Conn., Short Hills, N.J. and Columbus, Ohio. Next to open will be stores in Century City, Los Angeles, and South Coast Plaza in Orange County, Calif.

The Museum of Modern Art's new shop is in the old Grand Central Terminal, southeast of the main hall. It includes a selection of prewrapped items for those whose train is just about to leave.

The museum has a gift and book shop within the 52nd Street museum itself, as well as the MoMA Design Store just across the street.
