An Orem man was apparently beaten to death Monday morning in west Salt Lake City.

He would become the 23rd homicide victim in Salt Lake City this year, breaking the city's record for the number of homicides to occur in one year. The victim was identified as Cornell McDonald, 37. Although he was from Orem, police said he was a transient who had been living in the Salt Lake area.

Detectives were notified Monday morning of a body in the middle of a field at 221 N. 500 West. Cornell's body was located near a makeshift shack in the field that had apparently been built and used by transients, said Lt. Jim Bell.

"It appeared as if he had been beaten severely about the head," he said. An initial autopsy indicated the victim had been beaten with a blunt instrument.

Bell said detectives were looking into the possibility that Monday's slaying was related to a similar incident that occurred Saturday morning. An unidentified transient was beaten and stabbed nearly to death in an alley at 139 W. Pierpont Avenue (240 South). Witnesses said they saw four transients beating the victim.
