A preliminary hearing for an Ogden man accused of killing his girlfriend's 7-month-old son has been continued to give officials of the Utah medical examiner's office more time to investigate.

Mel P. Gallegos, 38, was scheduled to appear Tuesday in 2nd Circuit Court, but a court spokesman said the preliminary hearing was continued until Jan. 18.Gallegos is charged with second-degree felony manslaughter in the Nov. 25 death of Adam Quade Anderson.

According to police, Gallegos told officers that he was alone with the baby when the boy began crying.

Gallegos allegedly told police he took Adam into the kitchen where he was frying pork chops and playfully tossed the child in the air to calm him.

Then the defendant said he bumped the frying pan, which distracted him and caused him to lose his grip on the baby. He said the infant hit the floor, possibly striking his head.
