A helicopter pilot and two passengers escaped serious injury in a crash at about 2:50 p.m. Monday 19 miles northwest of Vernal.
The crash victims were able to notify a ham radio operator of their location, which was relayed to a Salt Lake-based air ambulance that rescued the three men from the crash site on Marsh Peak in the Uintah Mountains, said Uintah County Deputy Jeff Merrill.Pilot Jerry Bingham, Bountiful, was treater for minor injuries at LDS Hospital. The two passengers, Ed Malin and Val Spruell, both of Vernal, were treated at the Ashley Valley Medical Center in Vernal.
Malin and Spruell were using the helicopter, chartered from Helicopter Services, to check a remote microwave tower for Industrial Communications Inc. at the time of the crash, said Merill.
Merrill said the crash may have been caused by a mechanical failure. Federal Aviation Administration investigators were to review crash site Tuesday.
