Rival black factions with guns, axes and other makeshift weapons clashed in the township of Thokoza east of Johannesburg, leaving 52 dead and prompting authorities to invoke emergency regulations in the area.

Law and Order Minister Adriaan Vlok clamped a 9 p.m.-to 4 a.m. curfew Monday on Thokoza and three other townships to quell the fighting that exploded late Sunday afternoon and raged through the night.The discovery in Thokoza of 52 victims, hacked, stabbed or shot to death, raised to 83 the number of people killed in politically inspired violence since Friday and was one of the highest death tolls in a single day this year.
