The Provo Police Mountain Rescue team brought two hikers down from a cliff in Rock Canyon late Sunday night after they became stranded on the ledge.

The two hikers, Nathan Spanos and Shawn Kenney, both 17, went hiking in the area of Buckley's Mine Trail around noon with one other youth and fathers of two of the boys. The adults hiked down the canyon ahead of the juveniles, who they believed were following behind. Around 4 p.m. the unidentified youth rappelled down the cliff, but Spanos and Kenney refused to follow in the falling darkness. A Provo resident noticed a flashing light in the area of Rock Canyon that appeared to be sending a help signal and called Provo police at 7 p.m.

A police officer found the two adults near the mouth of the canyon, and then called for the department's eight-man mountain rescue team, according to a Provo police dispatcher.

The team started up the canyon area where the boys were stranded about 9:20 p.m., and reached them shortly after 10 p.m. Both Spanos and Kenney were in good condition.
