Dr. John T. Wahlquist, former dean of the school of education at the University of Utah, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 1990, in Ogden. He was 91.

He was born Sept. 10, 1899, in Heber City to Charles and Elizabeth Campbell Wahlquist. He became an elementary school principal in Uintah County at age 18. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in education at the University of Utah, and a doctorate at the University of Cincinnati.Dr. Wahlquist served as dean of the College of Education at the U. from 1941 to 1952. He left to become president of San Jose State College in California, where he served until his retirement in 1964. During his years at the college, enrollment increased from about 6,500 students to nearly 19,500 students.

During his career, Dr. Wahlquist served as a faculty member of 12 colleges and universities throughout the United States. He authored several books on education and served as a member of several national education organizations.

A member of the LDS Church, Dr. Wahlquist served for 10 years as a member of the Sunday School General Board.

Services will be held in San Jose, Calif., on Monday. Burial will be in the Los Gatos, Calif., cemetery.
