Actor Burt Lancaster has suffered a stroke that has left him weak on his right side and made his speech difficult, a friend said.

The 77-year-old actor was stable but a full evaluation of his condition and prognosis was likely to take several days, said Jack M. Ostrow, Lancaster's friend and financial adviser, at a hospital news conference.Lancaster was rushed to Los Alamitos Medical Center about noon Friday after feeling faint while visiting a friend in Orange County.

He was under treatment of personal and hospital doctors, Ostrow said.

"At this time they've advised his family that Mr. Lancaster suffered a stroke," Ostrow said. "He now has right-side weakness as well as some difficulty in speech."

He said doctors belive it will be several days until "they're able to give a full report as to the nature and extent of his treatment and recovery." Lancaster's spirits were "fine," his friend said.
