A Tooele man faces a preliminary hearing on charges he was drunk in the accident that claimed the life of his passenger, a North Salt Lake woman.

Donald J. Pierce, 46, is charged with vehicular homicide, a third-degree felony, in the July 24 death of Janice L. Walton, 43. A hearing will be held Aug. 23 before 3rd Circuit Judge Sheila McCleve.Pierce was westbound on I-80 near Saltair when he lost control of his car, which veered into the eastbound lanes and rolled, according to a Utah Highway Patrol press release. Walton was ejected from the car and was pronounced dead on arrival at LDS Hospital. Pierce suffered minor injuries, the UHP reported.

According to a criminal complaint, Pierce's blood-alcohol level was 0.08, which is the limit at which one is considered legally intoxicated.
