Margaret Thatcher, the longest serving British leader this century, has been rewarded for her 11 1/2 years in power with a pension about equal to the salary of a well-paid London secretary.

Her pension of $34,185 a year is calculated according to a procedure laid down in 1937, a government spokesman said. She also will receive a private office at Parliament, but only so long as she remains a Parliament member.

Beyond that, the only perks of former office will be a limousine and a security detail. Because she could be a target of the Irish Republican Army for decades, security could cost the government hundreds of thousands of pounds a year.
