Memorial services for Dr. Owen P. Heninger, 93, former superintendent of the Utah State Hospital, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the State Hospital chapel, 1400 E. Center St.
Dr. Heninger, who directed the hospital from 1940 to 1964 and who is credited with developing patient government programs and improved treatment services at the hospital, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 1990, of natural causes in Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.Friends may call at the hospital chapel one hour before services Saturday. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Patient Fund, Utah State Hospital, 1400 E. Center, Provo, UT 84606.
Dr. Heninger, who will be remembered by many for his ability to recall the names of hundreds of patients at the state hospital, was born Nov. 18, 1897, in Ogden and moved to Magrath, Alberta, Canada, with his family in 1901. He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Utah in 1930 and graduated from the University of Chicago Medical School in 1933.
He practiced psychiatry in Salt Lake City from 1937 to 1939 and was first assistant physician at the state hospital from 1939 to 1942. Dr. Heninger was a member fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and certified as a hospital administrator by the American Psychiatric Association in 1954.
