President Saddam Hussein and other Iraqi leaders will be tried for war crimes just as the Nazis were after World War II, a senior U.S. official said Friday.

Secretary of State James A. Baker III and the foreign ministers of Britain, France and the Soviet Union all stressed the individual liability of Iraq's leaders in their addresses before the U.N. Security Council on Friday.A senior U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the Geneva Conventions of 1949 on the protection of civilians and the 1925 Geneva Accords barring the use in war of chemical or biological weapons provide the legal basis for culpability.

Iraq is a party to both agreements.
