A mob stormed a jail and burned to death a man and his three sons who had been arrested on charges of killing a shopkeeper, police said Friday.

About 1,500 people surrounded the jail in La Mana, a village 71 miles southeast of Quito, forcing the guards to flee, police said. The crowd then spread gasoline and set fire to the jail."In a few minutes the whole building was ablaze. The four arrested men cried asking help, but their cries were ignored by the perpetrators of such terrible crimes," the newspaper El Comercio of Quito said Friday.
