Two Salt Lake City police officers were treated for human bite wounds they received while trying to arrest a man late Tuesday night after responding to a report of a fight.
Lt. Norm Thompson said officers David Cracroft and Paul Gardner were both treated for bite wounds at Holy Cross Hospital. The man arrested was also treated at the hospital before being booked into jail.Salt Lake police responded to a call at 771 S. Second East at approximately 10:30 p.m. Thompson said two men were fighting on the sidewalk and the fight spilled over into nearby apartments.
One man took a garden tool and threw it through a window in the door of the apartment, then tried to strike people through the glass with a large piece of pipe, Thompson said.
A woman at the scene told the Deseret News the police violently beat the man when he was arrested. Thompson denied the policemen used unnecessary force.
Johnny I. Gallegos, 23, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of assault, aggravated assault, assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and residential burglary.
