About 100 people, including a number of dignitaries, fell into a small river in Veracruz state when the hanging bridge they were inaugurating collapsed, the independent news agency Excelsior reported.

About 30 people were injured, including nine who had to be hospitalized, the news agency said.The bridge across the La Antigua River, near the Gulf of Mexico port of Veracruz, collapsed during the late afternoon ceremony, said Ismael Bravo Vela, the judicial official at the village of La Posta, the news agency reported.

The bridge was built to link La Posta with the village of La Antigua.
