Lawrence F. Eckman, contractor, civic leader and businessman passed away at home of natural causes on Sunday, November 25, 1990.
Born June 8, 1912 in Bingham, Utah, to August and Ellen Benson Eckman who died in the flu epidemic of 1918. Adopted by Uncle and Aunt, Edward and Martha Hellman Eckman of Murray, Utah.Graduated from Murray High School in 1931. Married Ivy M. Nelson December 16, 1933. Worked as an agent for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for nine years. Moved to Bountiful in 1942 where he worked at Hill Air Force Base as a mechanic foreman during World War II. Started L.F. Eckman Construction Co. in 1947. Has built many residential and commercial buildings along the Wasatch Front. He served as past president of Bountiful Rotary Club. Built and served on the hospital board for South Davis Community Hospital and helped implement the Lakeview Hospital. He was fundraising chairman of the district Boy Scouts of America.
While on the city council, he served as chairman of the Bountiful City Power Commission where he gave valuable assistance in acquiring electric power for the city of Bountiful from the Bureau of Reclamation of the Colorado River Storage Project. He was a former member of Oakridge Country Club and Bountiful Lion's Club. He also served on the Bountiful Planning Commission where he was instrumental in acquiring land for the current Bountiful Civic Center, National Guard facility and Bountiful parks. Member of the LDS Church.
Survivors include his wife, Ivy M. Nelson Eckman; sons, larry, (wife Anne); Randy and daughter, Ruth Marie; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Albert Eckman and Royal Shields; sisters, Lucille (husband Dominic Gamingasco); Louise Keller, and LaVine Nemanic. Preceded in death by brothers Harvey and Leonard; and sister Josephine.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 29, 11 a.m. at the Bountiful 16th LDS Ward, 720 East 550 North. Friends may call Wednesday 6-8:30 p.m. at Lindquist's Bountiful Mortuary, 727 North 400 East, and one hour prior to services at the church. Interment, Bountiful City Cemetery.
