The retrial of Charles Nicholas Strain may cost Utah County more than $7,000 in witness fees and travel expenses.

Strain, convicted in 1986 of second-degree murder, was granted a new trial by the Utah Supreme Court because it said a confession made by Strain was inadmissible. Strain's new trial is scheduled to begin Dec. 10 in 4th District Court in front of Judge George E. Ballif.Last week county commissioners approved an emergency transfer of funds into the criminal prosecution fund to cover the expense of bringing about 20 witnesses to Provo for the trial. Prosecutors expect to bring witnesses from as far away as Massachusetts.

County officials said they may ask for the trial to be delayed until next year so the trial's expense can be included in the 1991 budget.
