A head-on collision in Provo Canyon Sunday sent three people to the hospital, two with serious injuries.

George Elston, 60, was westbound when he apparently crossed over into the eastbound lane, said Utah Highway Patrol Trooper David Sheen. The accident occurred near Upper Falls at about 3:45 p.m.Johnnie Defa, 59, from Evanston, Wyo., was driving an eastbound car. He was treated at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center and released.

His wife, Betty Defa, was in stable condition Monday with a fractured rib and lacerations, said nursing supervisor Flora Gillman.

Elston, of Provo, went to surgery Sunday night at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center and was listed in critical condition Monday morning. Gillman said he suffered multiple fractures in the accident.

Sheen said the cars were traveling about 40 miles per hour when the accident occurred. The Defas were wearing their seat belts. The accident is still under investigation.
