A Salt Lake County Jail prisoner died early Monday after apparently hanging himself Sunday with a bed sheet in the jail's psychiatric cell block.
Gary Walter Marta, 35, Tomball, Texas, was found hanging from the metal frame of his bed at 9:28 a.m., said Lt. Glen Bailess. Jail personnel had checked Marta's cell at 9:20 and had noticed nothing amiss, he added.Bailess said he evidently used a sheet from his bed to strangle himself.
The unconscious prisoner was given emergency treatment at the scene and was then transported to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was in critical condition late Sunday. A hospital spokeswoman said Marta died at 2:30 a.m. Monday.
Marta was arrested Nov. 23 in Salt Lake City on a fugitive warrant issued by Nevada and was being held without bail pending extradition. He was placed in the jail's mental health section after complaining of psychiatric disorders.
Bailess said Marta apparently had given no indication of being a suicide risk and was not being continuously monitored. The incident is under investigation.
