Fire damaged an abandoned downtown building Saturday night, closing State Street to traffic.
Firefighters arrived just after 10 p.m. at 229 S. State to find fire on the second floor of the three-story structure. The fire was under control in about 10 minutes, Battalion Chief Bruce McGill said. The cause of the fire and the amount of damage to the building are under investigation. Firefighters said remnants of campfires were found on the building's lower floors, though they were cold at the time of the fire.
"Sometimes transients will get into these buildings and light fires," McGill said. "That's a possibility." No one was injured in the fire.
Police rerouted traffic from State Street between 200 and 300 South.
