A missing Ute Mountain tribal policeman apparently fell asleep at the wheel and was killed in a one-car crash on U.S. 160 about 30 miles southeast of here.

The body of Officer Delford Kay was found in his wrecked car in a ravine near a straight stretch of the Colorado road on Saturday afternoon, said Ute Mountain Police Chief Tim Root."The officer (apparently) fell asleep at the wheel," he said, adding that no foul play is suspected.

Law officers from Utah, Colorado and Arizona and FBI agents had been searching for Kay, a 21-year-old rookie officer who had vanished after radioing his dispatcher to say he was heading home at about 4 a.m. Thursday.

The car was found at 3:47 p.m. on the Ute Mountain reservation about 10 miles from where the borders of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona meet.
