Twenty kilos of cocaine valued at $2 million were found in the spare tire well of a vehicle and the car's two occupants arrested after the car was stopped by a Utah Highway Patrol trooper near Nephi Tuesday.
Jesus J. Valdez, 28, and Silvero Coral, 34, both Mexican nationals, have been charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. Bail was set at $20,000 each, and the car was seized.Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Paul Mangelson said the car, northbound on I-15, was stopped just east of Nephi between two freeway exits because it had an expired California license plate.
The UHP trooper received permission to search the vehicle, said Mangelson, after he became suspicious the pair might have drugs in the vehicle.
Mangelson said $1,150 in cash was also seized.
This is the latest in a string of drug arrests made along I-15 near Nephi, said Mangelson.
