Fire destroys 14 homes in Colorado Firefighters try to extinguish a fire in a house on Olde Stage Road, northwest of Boulder, Colo. A prairie fire, fanned by chinook winds, destroyed 2,400 acres, gutted 14 homes and forced evacuation of residents from a 2-square-mile area. No deaths or injuries were reported. Sheriff's deputies arrested Arno Stein, 62, in connection with the fire. Investigators speculated that candles he was burning in his house torched the mattress that triggered the fire. More than 200 fire-fighters from 25 local fire departments were on the fire lines. An aerial tanker was en route from California to drop fire retardant chemicals on the blaze.
