The 13th annual "Messiah" Sing-In, sponsored by the Deseret News and Utah Symphony Chorus, will take place this evening at 7:30 p.m. in Symphony Hall. Tickets are sold out for this event.

Edgar J. Thompson will conduct the Utah Chamber Orchestra, Symphony Chorus and audience in a dozen choruses from the beloved oratorio. Soloists for the evening are Carol Nelson, soprano; Carla Cook, mezzo-soprano; Michael Ballam, tenor; and Steven Meredith, baritone.Nelson is the 1990 first-place winner of the Utah Metropolitan Opera auditions. She is a frequent soloist with the Bountiful Symphony and Chorus, and has sung locally in light opera and concert.

Carla Cook, a native of Utah, has been hailed as "one of the world's great upcoming Wagnerians." A graduate of the University of Utah with a master's degree in music from Boston University, she has won Utah Metropolitan Opera Auditions, has sung frequently with San Francisco Opera and Seattle Opera. She made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1984 in "Mahagonny" by Kurt Weill.

Michael Ballam now teaches at Utah State University in Logan, and continues a distinguished career in opera and oratorio, with such companies as Kentucky, Philadelphia, Washington, Tulsa, Mississippi, Santa Fe, and Michigan operas, and the symphony orchestras of Houston, Dallas, Minnesota and Utah.

Steven Meredith, a native Utahn, is now teaching at Scottsdale Community College and completing doctoral studies at the University of Arizona. A U. graduate, he has sung at California festivals, with the Utah Opera and Utah Symphony, and earlier this year toured southern France with an ensemble conducted by Robert Shaw.
