Moviegoers who watched "Home Alone" this weekend had plenty of company as the comedy about a little boy left by himself when burglars strike debuted at No. 1 at the box office.

"Home Alone," from 20th Century Fox, took in $17 million at the gate and knocked the latest Rocky Balboa film, "Rocky V," into second place with a $14 million take, according to Exhibitor Relations Co. figures.The return of Chuckie the killer doll in "Child's Play 2" finished third at $5 million, down from first place last week. The animated feature "The Rescuers Down Under" opened in fourth with $3.49 million.

Kevin Costner's directorial debut in "Dances With Wolves" continued to be a howling success, grossing $565,000 on just 14 screens for a two-week total of $1.53 million. It moved into national release Wednesday.

The otherworldly romance, "Ghost," refused to disappear, finishing fifth with $3 million in sales. That brought the total box office sales for the film to $190.3 million.

In sixth, the psychological Vietnam drama "Jacob's Ladder" took in $2.82 million on 1,264 screens.

In seventh with $1.72 million was "Reversal of Fortune," a film about the Von Bulow murder case. The sex-and-death farce "Sibling Rivalry," starring Kirstie Allie, finished eighth with $1.57 million.

In ninth was the May-December romance "White Palace," with $1.45 million in ticket sales, followed by Tom Selleck's Australian cowboy fable "Quigley Down Under" with $1.34 million in 10th.
