Detective work by a Cedar City businessman has led to the arrest of an Arizona man suspected of stealing about $40,000 worth of historic documents from a Nevada casino, police said Friday.

John Morgan, 33, Riviera, Ariz., has been charged in connection with the theft and may face federal allegations related to interstate transportation of the stolen papers, including an 1881 Standard Oil Co. stock certificate signed by Standard Oil founder John D. Rockefeller.Police Chief Pete Hansen said Warren Anderson, a Cedar City documents dealer, was contacted by Morgan about buying the documents.

Anderson said he was told the papers had been found in the trash. He then tried to trace them and finally located another dealer who said he had sold similar documents to a Laughlin, Nev., casino, Hansen said.

Casino owners determine the documents had been stolen from a storage warehouse. But, before they could be recovered, Morgan turned up in the southwestern Utah city to meet with Anderson.

Hansen said he went to the meeting, posing as Anderson's partner, and arrested Morgan.
