Pledges and donations to the Great Salt Lake Area United Way increased a half-million dollars last week, bringing the organization's total to more than $3 million. With that increase, United Way passed the halfway mark of its $6.2 million goal.

Participating organizations continue to report record increases from their 1989 donations and pledges. In the geographic division, Mark Miller Subaru doubled its pledges, Airport Hilton Inn increased by 278 percent, BTS Inc. increased by 177 percent, CR England and Sons showed a 413 percent increase and Cirrus Systems rose by 193 percent.The professional division reported a 57 percent increase from KPMG Peat, Marwick and Main and a 32 percent increase from Utah Issues in the public service division. Increases from the major firms division include Rainbo Oil with a 174 percent increase, First Security Bank with a 17 percent increase and Fred Meyer with an 11 percent increase.

Collected funds will be used to support 114 programs in 55 local health and human service agencies in Salt Lake, Tooele and Summit counties. Volunteer panels visit applicant agencies in January before deciding how to allocate funds.
