Buying time Shoppers cross Main Street in downtown Salt Lake City. Stores in the valley's hinterlands reported strong sales Friday morning - traditionally the biggest shopping day of the year, but downtown stores got off to a fairly slow start. Months of construction on downtown streets, parking terraces and the ZCMI mall may have accounted for the near empty streets early Friday. "There are still shoppers shopping, but we will have to be sharper than ever about prices," said Dell Stokes, manager of the downtown ZCMI. On the other hand, toy merchants in the valley are unabashedly jolly about their early sales. At least 75 people were waiting for Lionel Playworld at the Brickyard to open its doors.
