Nearly 250,000 colorful Christmas lights were turned on Friday night at Temple Square during a traditional lighting ceremony and program that started at 5:30 in the Tabernacle. Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Council of the Twelve of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints delivered a Christmas message and then flipped a switch that emblazoned Temple Square with light. The Tabernacle program included musical presentations by the Mormon Youth Symphony and Chorus. Delbert Warner, public relations director of Temple Square, said trees and shrubs in Temple Square will be awash with colored lights until Jan. 3, and musicians and singers will present programs at Temple Square throughout the holiday season. "The lights will be turned on daily at the square from 6 to 8 a.m. and from 4 to 10:30 p.m.," Warner said. Decorative lights in Salt Lake's downtown business district were also turned on Friday at 5 p.m.
