In a split decision, the Centerville City Council this week voted to hold a public hearing on raising the salary of the mayor and council members. The hearing will be at 7:50 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, in the council chambers.

The mayor currently earns $600 a month, on a basis of $3,600 a year in pay and an additional $3,600 annually in travel. The proposed plan would boost that to $750 a month, with no additional travel benefits but a $25 per meeting attendance bonus. The council holds two regularly scheduled meetings a month, so the meeting bonus would add an extra $600 annually to the salary.

The proposal would increase council salaries from $175 a month, plus $1,500 annually for travel, to $250 a month and the $25 per meeting bonus.

The mayor's salary would be increased from $7,200 annually to $9,000, or $9,600 if he attends all the council meetings. The total compensation for council members would go from $2,100 annually to $3,000, or $3,600 for attending all the council meetings.
