The Deseret News, Utah Power & Light Co., and the Illuminating Engineering Society are once again sponsoring their annual Christmas Outdoor Lighting Contest for homes in south Davis and Salt Lake counties.
Judges from IES will consider originality, theme, use and number of lights, additional decorations and artistic merit in judging. The deadline for entry is noon, Friday, Dec. 7. All entries must be delivered or mailed to the Deseret News, P.O. Box 1257, 30 E. 100 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84110.
As each entry is received, it is assigned to a geographical area and will be judged against other entries in the same general area. This year there will be no grand-prize winner.
According to Jim Turner, Salt Lake Region market specialist for UP&L, "We've done something different this year to encourage new entries. Because so many have decorated their homes for so many years and have such elaborate displays, newcomers to the contest have felt intimidated. That's why we have duplicate and equal prizes for entries in the newcomer and oldtimer categories in each geographic area."
First-place winners in each area will receive an indoor electric grill courtesy of UP&L; second-place winners, a $25 gift certificate from the ZCMI Center; and third-place winners, two sets of outdoor lights donated by General Electric.
A complete list of all entries by geographic area will be included in the Dec. 9 edition of the Deseret News. The contest winners will be announced in the newspaper Dec. 16.
A brochure with complete information about the Christmas Outdoor Lighting Contest is available at all UP&L offices and many of the specialty stores that sell Christmas lights and decorations.
Questions about the contest may be directed to the Deseret News community relations department at 237-2136.
