A Roosevelt pet-shop owner has been placed on three years probation for illegally purchasing 228 eastern box turtles from undercover federal agents.
Utah federal Judge Thomas Greene also sentenced Shaune Underwood, 30, to pay $1,685.95 in restitution, $1,080 of which is to go to the Lakeside Nature Center and the balance to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.Underwood was also ordered to perform 100 hours of community service and pay a $50 victim assessment fee. He could have been sentenced to up to nine months in prison for violation of the Lacy Act, which regulates the sale of wildlife.
According to prosecutors, Underwood had planned to resell the turtles to a company running pollution control experiments. Undercover officers had operated the sting operation out of Missouri.
Underwood pleaded guilty to one charge in exchange for the dismissal of an identical second charge involving 53 more box turtles.
